How do I use the Jim Kilpatrick signature tuning block?

The Jim Kilpatrick Tuning Block offers a unique way of setting up your drum, ensuring that you apply an even tension around the top and bottom heads and rings. The tuning block is a simple, easy to use method of tensioning your drum evenly and efficiently, giving you perfectly balanced tension on your drum heads.

The Jim Kilpatrick Tuning Block has number sequenced from 1 to 8. The eight numbers on the tuning block represent different steps and heights, number 1 being the lowest tension and number 8, the highest tension. Every number or step from number 1 to 8 is approximately one complete turn of the drum key.

The tuning block locates between the top and intermediate tension rings on your drum (on the top head). It also locates between the tension rings or ring and underside of the washer on the tension rod, on the bottom (see pictures below).

When setting up your new drum or fitting a new drum head, firstly tension all the tension rods as evenly as possible, until you reach the first step, or number 1 on the block. You should always tension around every space between the tension rods evenly, making sure not to over tension any one rod more than ¼ of turn at any one time.

Using the Jim Kilpatrick Signature tuning block

Step 1

When you have tensioned between all the tension rods around the drum, to number 1, turn the block to number 2 and do the same, making sure not to apply more than ¼ of the drum key at any one time.

Step 2

When you are sure the top and bottom rings are evenly tensioned to a specific number or step on the tuning block, move to the next number and repeat as before.

Step 3

There is no optimum number for tensioning on the tuning block. The player should decide on what pitch or tension they would like to achieve. The tension you apply will coincide with your top and bottom snare wire tension and height. I personally don’t take the tension on my drum to  the last number (8). However this is a personal choice.
